Unravelling what is real deliverance

When it comes to deliverance, one finds a lot of strong reactions to it among Christians. Some will say that they want nothing to do with demons. Some will say that demons and hell simply do not exist. Some try and find the devil behind every bush. Some ignore him completely, calling him a figment of one’s imagination or a symbolic expression or manifestation of mankind’s inner journey of understanding pain and grief.
Just as there are so many misconceptions about discipleship, God’s Kingdom and the Holy Spirit, there are so many false concepts, teachings, ideas and doctrines regarding deliverance. Partly because we do not understand the spiritual realm, the spiritual war, and how God as the Trinity created man to be spirit, soul and body. Ignorance dictates our ways and conduct when it comes to setting the captives free. Deliverance, like healing, is not a separate ministry but forms part of the duty and service of any disciple in accordance with Matthew 28. Yes, we are all called to practise deliverance, meaning to set the captives free!

One of the biggest mistakes we make is to think the devil no longer exists. Or that he is powerless. We also make the mistake of believing he is behind every bush. Mankind many times is his own worst enemy because of our decisions and choices. The reality is, we get into all kinds of trouble because we have forsaken God, who is our life. The devil is real, but we also have free will. Ultimately, we find life and liberty in God, yet we depart from His ways and truth, we find ourselves in the dark valleys of life.

Remember this truth: deliverance is not about the devil or his kingdom. It is all about God and His Truth. It is about healing, restoration, redemption, salvation, hope, and love. God is our Deliverance. He is not the means or the method of deliverance, but He IS Deliverance. If we want deliverance, we need God – but not an idea or the thought or religion about God, but God Himself. We need God in our lives and we need to abide in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to secure our deliverance and to walk in deliverance. Jesus is the Way of our Deliverance for He is the Truth and the Life.

Do you know that deliverance mostly needs to take place in the realm of the soul, not really in the spirit? A lot of issues we sit with deal with our minds and our hearts. This is why counselling is also linked to deliverance. Counselling is all about healing and deliverance. Any trauma, mental sickness, suffering or hurt is a form of stronghold that needs to be dealt with and broken down. It is an inner storm that needs to be stilled, inner demons that need to be faced and bondages of the spirit and soul that need to be broken. You see, we all need deliverance from such strongholds because pain, rejection, fear, guilt, shame, trauma or anger for example enslaves us. We all need deliverance from certain yokes and bondages, for even wrong mindsets and beliefs can cripple us emotionally, spiritually and can even lead to our bodies suffering sickness and ailments. No matter your pain, trauma, affliction, hurt, or oppression, it serves as a form of enslavement. God does not want us to be enslaved. He wants us to be free, liberated, restored and healed. Remember, God ultimately wants us to be healed spiritually, then in the soul and then in the body.

Just as we need to be properly equipped to understand the realm of deliverance, and how the soul, spirit and flesh are intricately connected, we need to understand that the spiritual war is real and we are all involved in it. War is defined as a state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country. The spiritual battle can be defined as a war for there is a conflict between the Kingdom of God and the already defeated yet functioning kingdom of the devil. Truth is, we are all involved in this war, unintentionally or intentionally, as believers or non-believers. As gravity affects all on earth, so does the spiritual war impact our lives daily from the rising to the setting of the sun.

As believers, we need to be equipped, empowered and trained in knowledge to understand the war and its manifold ramifications on humanity. This will lead to a deeper understanding regarding deliverance, and how everything that has ever happened on earth has an impact on this war and the battle for the soul of man. As mentioned, we are all part of this war, and all disciples are called to set the captives free in spirit, soul and body. The truth is, that all disciples are called to do deliverance, and deliverance is usually the first step of discipleship. We are here to train, equip, guide, and facilitate so that the Body of Christ can again be empowered in setting the captives free.
